Default No lease, security desposit

I live in California and I moved into my friends house about 9 months ago. I never signed a lease, but gave a security deposit. Girls being girls, we got into a huge (petty) fight and she gave me thirty days, which of course I complied to. We walked through the room and she wanted to charge me to clean the carpets, which are 20 years old, because I made them dirty. However the carpets look exactly the same as the rest of the house. My drawer of the refrigerator being cleaned, and dirty walls, (which aren't dirty, you have to look for it.) There are people still living in the house. Can she charge me for this?

I should also mention, that my friend/landlord made my life hell the past month, and even once sent me a text message saying "to just get things over with so I can be rid of you." Can her behavior help me at all?

Her behavior is immaterial and has no bearing on any deposit case. If the carpet in your room was dirty, she can charge you to clean the carpet, no matter how old it is. If any section that was your responsiblity needed to be cleaned after you left, your "LL" can charge you for these things too. You are supposed to be responsibsle enough to leave your unit clean when you move out, less normal wear & tear (which does not include dirt). You should have gone over these things with her at the pre-move out inspection. Did she offer you one per CA state law?

The place was definatley clean. My parents and I spent hours cleaning it. The carpet was no dirtier than when we came in. It was actually cleaner, because when I moved in it stunk of animals, because that's where they kept the animals. There was nothing more than normal wear and tear wrong with that carpet or the walls.
