Default storing property

I live in Ontario, Canada. We had a friend stay with us two years ago. He left all of his belongings here "until I find a new place". It has been almost a year since we have heard from him and I'm sure he has found a place to live by now. How long do we have to hold on to his belongings? Can we start selling and/or donating his stuff? He has a fishing boat here, can that be sold? We are trying to renovate and just don't have to room to store all of his things.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Default Re: storing property

Do you know where he lives now or his phone number? Contact him and tell him he has 30 days to remove his things. That would be the nice way to handle it. As for the legal way, you can probably dispose of his belongings, but since boats are titled, you probably will be unable to sell the boat. (You don't have the title for it.) You may be able to get a title for it by contacting the government office that licenses those and asking aboiut a title for an abandoned boat. Then you may be able to sell it. But personally, since he was a friend, I'd try to contact him and get him to take his stuff before you get rid of it.
