Surveillance cameras can be used in a business place for the smooth running of the business and to avoid mischievous acts inside the building. But that cannot be used for curtailing the freedom of others. So from the given facts it seems that by putting a camera pointing at one employee will amount to infringement of one’s personal freedom. If such a camera is placed in your business place then you can complain about the same to your superior officer or to HR (if an HR department is functioning). If they have not given you proper explanation then you may raise the issue before the concerned authorities (labor department).

I believe they can, if within plain sight of the public. If you are a cashier and stationed at a register then possibly, yes. Because you feel intimidated... How do you feel when you shop Walmart and see the black bubbles on the ceiling? I feel a person has a right to reasonable privacy. Privacy is not always guaranteed as how an employee sees it. More of an issue if within the restroom than within plain sight of the public. Employers at times can be responsible for risks associated with employment and certain job assignments for not taking responsibility for reactionary or proactive measures to insure reasonable safety. Depends on your local Governments laws. Example: a person (nonresident) looks through the closed window blind slats within the evolved persons residence to witness an adulterous act being committed and relays the deed. In this circumstance the reasonable privacy seems violated. Please detail how you feel your privacy is being violated.

when you shop at walmart is there not a sign that lets you know that you are being video taped? It has to be posted that you are under surveillance

EEK! Re: Intimidation with a camera -- Private business in Illinois

Most cases, public notice of video recording may not be necessary. Recording audio is an issue. Someone may feel that it's an invasion of privacy if some one takes a photograph of a person without permission in the park but in most cases if your not engaged in a lewd or lascivious act, you really don't have much right to privacy in public assessable areas. Only reasonable privacy. Example: An employer of a popular bar in a bad neighborhood has no cameras, bouncers, or security measures. A young woman gets beaten, raped and left unconscious in the parking lot. She happens to be a server who works there. Now this is not only a business safety liability issue but can be a worker's comp issue to. A person really has little right to privacy except when something violates a individual's person. Sometimes privacy must be sacrificed for security. How would you feel about getting X-rayed to get on a flight or otherwise chose to have the screening individual wedge his or her hand in your crotch and slide his or her hand down you legs for security reasons? The screening attendant may not necessarily be a licensed nurse or doctor.
