Accountability in the Office (missing dongle/usb key)

Good day.

My office has just recently transferred to a new location and as such all office equipments were also transferred. My computer has a dongle or a usb key used to start a certain software. I asked the person in charge of transferring the equipments if they will do so over the weekend. She said "no, I don't think so because the new office is still not done." So I left the dongle at its usual place at the back of my CPU holding her to her word.

When I got to the office today I found out that our equipments were already transferred over the weekend. So I immediately went to the new office to find our stuff still in disarray and that the computers needed to be set up because they were still dismantled. I then looked for the dongle at the back of the CPU and didnt find it there. I looked for it amongst the boxes and other items and still didnt find it. (I found out later that some of my personal belongings were also missing. An officemate of mine had also left his dongle at the back of his CPU but it was still there when he checked it.)

I asked the person in charge to round up the people who dismantled & transferred the computers and to make the long story short they denied seeing anything. Apparently the equipment was never inventoried and were just tagged with names.

Now a similar thing happened a couple of years before when one department had to change locations in our office. He was not informed of the activity and when he got back the following week the dongle was already gone. The person in charge of the transfer then was the one also in charge now. And the people who did the moving this time were not employees but laborers of the contractor of the construction of the new office.

So I would like to know if I should be held accountable and cover the cost of the missing dongle/usb key based on the given circumstances?

No. The confusion is caused by the move and the employer is responsible for that.
