I left on dec 23 I left to go on vacation, I counted the register drawer which was even and I counted the safe and it was even. After I left to start vacation the area manager came in to do the deposits for me and she claims that when she counted the safe it was 63 dollars short and when she counted the register it was 10 short. she didnt have anyone verify either one of her counts. 5 days later after I came back from vacation the area manager wrote me up for the shortages and tried to demote me and then she said that I had to pay back the shortage and if I didn't it would be deducted from my last check or my vacation time. No if the offense was so serious why was I not written up or suspended on the day that it happened. I was still allowed to go on vacation. At no time during my vacation did my boss attempt to contact me about this issue. I don't think that I should have to pay back the shortage because that would make me look like I was guilty of something which I am not. I also don't think I can be forced to pay the shortage back when I was not there to verify the shortage. Also why was I not written up, suspended or fired when this supposed shortage happened. What are my rights here? They are trying to dock my check.

In your case, the register drawer and safe were checked in your absence and infact it was checked only by the area manager without a witness. Hence, you can argue that you cannot be blamed for shortage because firstly there is no proof to show that there was shortage when you left for vacation and secondly as you have counted and found every thing satisfactory before leaving, therefore, any other person in your absence may have taken the money found short by area manager. For making you guilty they should disclose as to how you have been liable when the safe and register drawer were not in your control when you were on vacation. You should report the matter to your higher management.
