Confused Employment Contract Dispute: Should they pay me?

After being fired, I received a deduction on my final cheque from the employer for roughly $3500 for Class 1 driver's training and uniform.

The contract that I signed when I first started for this was very simple. It lists the equipment with the prices and then says:

"By signing this form you agree that if you terminate for any reason within the first six months of your employment with *****, you will be charged for the above on your final pay."

My take on this is that to terminate, I would need to quit of my own will instead of them making me... otherwise shouldn't it say "If you are terminated"? I was fired and believe they have no grounds to charge me.

I have tried to negotiate and sent them the self help package I filled out from labor standards with no success. Should they pay me?

We agree.

They should not fire you and then deduct. You did not terminate.

Thank you, I'll go ahead and take my case to a lawyer and see what happens next.
