Question Whistleblower case in California

I was a community service officer (cso) for two years at an ungated community of over 2500 homes. Upon hire I received and signed a handbook which stated company guidelines and procedures. It also stated that while cso's are on patrol, we are liable for any citations we receive while on duty. My supervisor posted a directive that we are to conduct vehicle patrol of the community, which are city streets, with our amber light bars activated at all times. This is a direct violation of the California Vehicle Code. I refused the order and was called into the office several times and threatened to be fired. I am a volunteer with the sheriff's department. My supervisor told me that if the sheriff's department 'somehow got wind of his order I would be terminated'. The sheriff obviously saw our units patrolling the property with the light bars on and began pulling over the patrol vehicles and informing the cso's that they would be cited. In confidence I contacted my commanding officer at the sheriff's department and provided him with my supervisor's order and told him what was happening to me. Even though the cso's were being pulled over and threatened with citations, the supervisor continued to insist we patrol with the light bars activated. He went as far as checking up on us at all hours on his off time to see who was patrolling with the light bars on. I was continiously harrassed for not following his directive. The supervisor held a couple of monthly meetings and reinforced his directive and threatened to fire me in front of everyone if I wouldn't comply. (The other 10 cso's were guttless and did as directed). My supervisor felt he could sway the sheriff into allowing his cso's to patrol with the light bars on so he actually went so far as to schedule an appointment with the chief of police. At this meeting the chief brought the city manager. The city officials obviously told my supervisor he was out of line and ordered the light bars removed from our patrol vehicles. My supervisor was furious at me over the issue and I was terminated without cause or any reason what so ever two months later. I was terminated against protocol dictated in the employee handbook I was given. Do I have any sort of legal action I can take and if so, what should I ask for? Thank you for reading my post.

If you were terminated solely for pointing out a violation of law, you could seek damages or even have the job back.

You may want to discuss with counsel.
