Yes it can take some time from the filing of the initial I-129F alien fiance(e) petition at the USCIS service center to the K-1 visa interview at the consulate/embassy. Generally though, the process is completed in 6-12 months depending on variables. Such as: If there is any name hits or security issues with the background/security checks, if there is delays caused by information and evidence submitted not being complete, and ultimately how long the individual consulate/embassy takes in scheduling interviews, etc. There is quite long wait times for interviews at certain consulates/embassies e.g. Philippines, Dominican Republic. Also, depending on how smoothly the process goes and on the wait times for interviews, a K visa can be in hand as early as 4 months. There has been reports of such.
See the processing times for the initial petition by using the Case Status Online and Processing Times link at USCIS Home Page Look for the link on the left hand side.

My k1 took 6 months. Im from Australia , it went pretty quick. Just a word of caution, keep every single form they send you no matter how insignificant you think it is.

I applied for the Fiance visa as the petitioner in Oct. 08 I recieved my first NOA on Nov 13th 08. I've checked online everyday and it's not found.. I called and they said the system hasnt' been "refreshed" yet for 2009. But I spoke with a wonderfully nice lady who told me that it is being processed and if I don't hear back for request for more info by mid Feb 08 I should get a decision letter by end of March. My fiance is in Ireland he has traveled twice to see me and my daughter and stayed just under the allowed 90days each time. He just left in beginning of Jan from his second visit when we got engaged
. It's so hard and I miss him so much, but we both agree legal is best. I'm hoping if I get a decision letter by end of March that means he could be back by June/July as I know it will still take a few months to do everything on the side of Ireland (medical, interview etc). Sometimes I get irritated thinking 'I'm american, I'm suppose to be free to pursue my happiness" yet I'm being kept from the one I LOVE. I just know it will all be worth it once it's over and complete. I just hate that the time we spend apart can never be regained and life is too short. I wish the process was quicker.

Hey all...Both me and my partner are about to take this same journey. We met online around early April '08. It amazing me how a person could actually fall in love just by chatting on msn etc.. To cut a long story short, we both fell in love, I went to see her last new years '08-09 (by the way I`m in australia she`s a us citizen) I was there for 2 weeks. She then came over here in March. We have decided to get married in the us. Therefore I'm hoping the k1 visa process is not so long. It`s now June and she`s about to go back home to the states....I wish I could go back with her but the k1 app must be filed in her home country...

i met my girl online and was amazed at how deep the feelings run for someone ,im terrified right now of being denied , they dont make it easy for anyone to do this ,there should be a forum specifically for those who have this k1 problem ,i scour the internet and ask questions ,,its a whole lot of heartache and worry that i dont need ,i havent even started the process as i have questions that need answering ,the whole thing is so regimented and orderly and yet so vague and incomprehensable too,
what i wouldnt give for some straight answers ... |
