I work as a construction laborer for a small construction company. I am the only female in the field. My doctor says I cannot continue any heavy work because I have had problems with bleeding. The doctor gave me a note saying I could not continue. My employer says they don't have any light duty work. I am in limbo now with no income and my employer has cancelled my health insurance. They offered me the cobra insurance option at $250 a month. I don't have any income now so I cannot afford this. They have basically shown me the door but have not laid me off. I have not received any maternity leave or anything. All they did was offer me my job back after the pregnancy. What are my rights in the state of Virginia?

Those acts are illegal if pregnancy is the only reason they did that--You could consult your nearest Department of Labor office to briefly discuss the issue with them first...you may also want to ask the company to put what is happening in writing and explain to them that you may have attorneys review the situation...
