Confused Subpoenaed In Iraq

I was recently subpoenaed to appear in court as a witness in an ongoing investigation. I have no idea why, but they think I have something to contribute to the case. I was not personally served the subpoena because I am in Iraq. My employer agrees that I should respond, but is requiring that I take personal leave to go or I will not get paid to attend court.

Is this legal? Is my employer not obligated to allow me to go and pay me for my absence in accordance with a court order?
