Default downloading music

I read on the Internet that it is not illegal to rip a Music CD to one\'s computer for personal use as that CD would be already in the public domain. Is that right?

If ripping of music is illegal, how come Microsoft offers the Mediaplayer with the possibility to rip?

You cannot copy copyrighted music for yourself if you did not pay for it...

--unless you somehow have permission from the author.
