Default Forums racist comments

I am a moderator of a chat forum, which contains an 'E-dissing' section. In this section members are allowed to argue with one another, and even be abusive within the confines of the rules. The site operates a no racism policy, but only deems comments targetting religion racism, so they do allow comments such as 'Paki...' etc

Could the site get in trouble for allowing this? Is this in anway against the law?

Also, if they lifted all restrictions and allowed attacks on religion, would this be illegal? Would they get in trouble if a member complained?

I'm based in the UK.

...best not to allow it as if they file charges etc. and you are deemed to be cooperating with it or encouraging it, you may also have legal charges that at a minimum you could have to defend against.

When you say best not to allow it, do you mean no banter at all calling someone a 'paki', or do you mean not allowing attacks on religion?

What if that art of the forum was restricted access, so that only certain members were allowed to enter, and would be fully aware of the content of that section, and know that they're race or religion may come under attack. Would/could we still get in trouble?

Explicit disclaimers can help but do not protect you 100%.
