Exclamation Breaking: Woman Ordered to Pay $1.92M for Illegal Downloading

Wowza. The RIAA has brought 30,000 suits against alleged file-sharers, but only one has gone to trial. Today, the RIAA won big.

A 32-year-old Minnesota woman was found liable for illegal file-sharing and ordered to pay $1.92 million in damages. That amounts to $80,000 for each of the songs Jammie Thomas-Rasset was accused of downloading. Click here for the story, from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. As great as those old Def Leppard tunes are, $80k’s a little steep.

The RIAA brought suit against her in 2006. A federal jury in Duluth found her liable up to $220,000 for copyright infringement of 24 specific songs the RIAA focused on — $9,250 per song. U.S. District Judge Michael Davis called a mistrial because he said he gave the jurors the wrong instructions.
