Personal Info. displayed online...

I recently discovered that, after purchasing a Domain, all my personal information has been published online for anyone to easily find by just searching the “Whois” database.

My full name, address and telephone number is currently being displayed on Register.com. I have sent them notice that I do not authorize display of my personal information and for them to remove it; they basically just laughed at me.

I wrote my registrar, and they will not respond. I believe this is enough consolidated information for someone to steal my identity or worse.

It appears that Register.com has an extortion setup – For a yearly fee they will hide your personal information. I do not want to give-in to this extortion unless it is my last option.

I am concerned for my financial and otherwise wellbeing, and I want my information removed from easy access for any crazy person out there to find and use. I also think this extortion scam is wrong, illegal, and it should be stopped.

In case you have purchased a Domain and didn't know about this, go to register.com's 'Whois" link and take a look.

What options do I have?

You can edit that information and place a new email address and phone or even designate other persons to be the listed persons.
