Hi,
I hesitated a long time before I finally decided to post a reply here. I was born in China and emigrated to Canada few years ago. Now, with an MBA degree from Canada, I am working in China as a Canadian citizen, on work visa/permit, running a small export company with a few local friends. I can see the rage from the posters here who experienced negatively dealing with some bad Chinese people. I feel really sorry about that. I guess there are more profound background than saying all Chinese people are liars. If that was true, the recent Olympic game would not be like what we saw in the past weeks. 1. The cultural and value system difference is so great that even the definition of lying is different in China and US. I have noticed this when I was studying the Business Law at the business school in Canada. Most Chinese people would not testify against his or her friends or relatives on court even if they are WRONG or committed crime. And this is largely acceptable in China. But in western society, this action itself may infringe on some laws. 2. The fast track economic growth in the past 30 years has been blowing away some traditional values / virtues that was largely compromised during the Cultural Revolution before China opened its door to outside world in 1978. People are very money centric, from kids to adults, from individuals to the government. Don't you see the country has been growing the economy at the price of the environment and people's health? 3. The fast changing rules and regulations from the government, which are far from clearly defined anyway, creates a lot trouble for normal business. Not to mention the corrupted government officers are distorting the enforcements of all these rules. One container we exported 3 weeks ago was stopped by local customs and we were told verbally that we used wrong HS Code and we should pay some penalty, and tax, and ... This is the 3rd container of the same product and the previous two were all fine and one of them was even opened and examined and passed. In the same time, some people claiming knowing the customs officers is offering an under table service to 'nail this down', but at a fee to us. I now know that central government has reduced the salary for the whole customs system since last year, so the clerks are finding new ways to generate some grey income to compensate themselves, at the cost of legitimate business. I hope all this comments can provide some ground for understanding the true situation here, not for lying though. Some lie in the trade is actually not lie, but was caused by changing rules. Buying from China may be still cheaper than buying from some other countries, but the margin may not be as shown on the invoice. There are some grey price to be paid. I am very thankful that I became a Christian when I was in Canada. Without the support of the faith in the Almighty, I can't imagine how I can face all these value conflict in such a fast changing environment. David dyu@megamaple.com |
