Default Britain to clarify assisted suicide laws

The director of public prosecutions in Britain was scheduled to issue new guidelines Wednesday on assisted suicide, making clear at what point people face charges if they help a loved one go abroad to die.

The issuing of the policy is a direct result of a high-profile case brought by British multiple sclerosis sufferer Debbie Purdy, who had sued to find out what would happen to her husband under the law if he helped her to end her life.

The guidelines issued Wednesday will be an interim policy and could still be influenced by a public consultation, the spokeswoman for the director of public prosecutions said. A final policy is expected to be released in the spring.
