Is my Lawyer doing his job?

I was a victim of a drunk driving accident on Aug. 5 2006 which left me using a walker, in a cast exc. exc. with no car, no money exc. From the get-go i thought i hired the wrong lawyer, I NEEDED a rental vehicle but i live paycheck to paycheck and my lawyer said just get one youll be paid in the end for it. only he did not understand that i didnt have the money to do that so i called the other drivers insurance and got them to ok me to get a rental car. my lawyer got very mad and told me never to talk to them again. which i understand but if he aint going to do what i need then i have to. now, he never calls or updates me about anything. its been almost 2 years and ive probley talked to him 3 times. ive called him then he just says there trying to figure this and that out. but it seems to me that im just being put on the back burner because the other driver only had liability insurance with a $25,000. limit. what can i do, what is it that my lawyer should be doing? ive never had a lawyer b4. So im not sure how this all is suppose to work.

That is taking too long.

Have another lawyer look over the situation--or call the insurer and ask what is happening if you absolutely have to. They may not talk if you have counsel--but you can perhaps get some basic info.
