Help with Morgage Insurance

I'm new here and I thank you for allowing me to ask questions. I live in Minnesota. My question is my wife and I purchased our house in 1986 and we bought mortgage insurance for her and life insurance for me so if we both died the kids would have the house paid for and have extra money. Well, we divorced in 1994 and my wife got the house. She told me that she kept up the payments for the mortgage insurance and did not change a thing. Well she passed away this February and when my kids tried to see about the insurance, they were told that what we paid for was accidental insurance and not mortgage life insurance. I know we got mortgage and not accidental but my kids do not have a copy of the insurance policy. We contacted the insurance company; Assurance Life of Florida and they say
that they dont have a copy either because the original insurance company sold the policy to Assurance. I dont know the original company but shouldnt Assurance got copies of all the policies? All we have are receipts saying we paid optional insurance premiums of $13.50 per month. Any help will sure be appreciated. Thank you for your time.
