Scared and Uninsured

I was recently in a car accident. It was at fault and I had no insurance. I
informed the guy that I would pay for his damages and he said ok. He went to
his dealer and got an estimate for 1,886 worth of damages, he will not let me see the estimate. I told him that I did not think his damages cost that much and would like to go with him to pay for the damamges in person. He did not want me to go with him and pay but instead wanted me to write him a check for the estimate. I think that he got a high estimate so he could pocket some money from me. I feel as though I am only obligated to pay for his damages and not to give him extra money, because I don't want to write him a check instead I want to deal with whatever place he decides to go personally he wants to go through his insurance now. I understand that I was responsible for the damamges but feel as though I also have the
right to want to pay the people directly so he doesn't pocket any of my
money. What do I do, am I right or am I wrong?

You can maintain that position yes!

If they disagree then let it go to small claims court.
