Default Question regarding landlord homeowners insurance

During the last few weeks, there have been a string of
car stereo thefts in the parking lot of my apartment
complex. Sometime last week, someone attempted to
steal the stereo out of my neighbor's car, but was
unsuccessful. Somehow my neighbor decided they "knew"
the crooks would come back, so he staked out his car
with a loaded gun. At approximately 4:30am last Friday
morning, the thieves showed up. My neighbor confronted
them, and a gunfight ensued. Nobody was hurt as far as
I know, but during the course of the fight the thieves
rammed my car and destroyed it. The car is worth
approximately $2,000, and the damages far exceed it's
value. I only have liability insurance on my car so
that will not cover the damage, and I do not have
renter's insurance.

A person claiming to be a lawyer online advised me
that it's possible to claim the damages to my car with
my landlord's homeowners insurance. My question is
whether or not property owners are required to carry
such coverage (it's a very large property owned by a
large rental company), and if so how can I go about
filing such a claim. Any other information you could
give me would be much appreciated as well.
Thank you very much

BTW, I'm in Nevada.

Not sure that the landlord is liable here--but the gun-toting person sure is. That is not legal to sit out with a gun and wait like that.
