Dear sir madam
I live in costa rica, and have for 14 years I,am married to a costa rican lady, I,am 68 yoa, recently I went to renew my passport at the american embassy in san jose and they said since I owe back child support in excess of $2500.00 they can,t renew my passport. They said I need to go to the u.s and contact the state department and or the state that canceled my passport. I explained that I live here in costa rica and married to a costa rican for 11 years and why go to the u.s and wait around for somebody to decide my fate, they said I need to pay the state that I owe the money to, I said I haven,t got $127,000 to do that. I also explained they are taking $1214.00 per month out of my social security and state pension and leaves me $650.00 per month to live on, and even If I went to the u.s I couldn,t afford to live there and now hardly costa rica. I also explained I have been paying child support since 1994 and that my daughter is now 19 yoa, but the state say,s you are paying arrears to the mother, I said that I was paying what the state told me to pay back in 1994, it was also based on my income at the time by tax returns, but the state said you didn,t pay enough so interest continued to grow to huge amount that I will never be able to pay. I have talked to the u.s embassy several times they said they can,t to a thing, I tried to talk to the state that has the lean and they won,t even return my mail or phone call,s. Got any idea,s can anything be done? I know it is superior court order. please advise and maybe we can do business. thank you for taking the time to read this. |

You could go to the state court and seek a reduction of the amount. Of course you risk some time in jail with that amount due.
A lawyer may be able to work out something? Any chance you ex will agree some kind of solution; she can do that as well. |
