Recently, the House of Representatives and the Senate have proposed
two important bills that would dramatically change immigration laws in the U.S., altering the historic preference system and emphasis on family unity to a system based on our nation's economic interests. These proposed changes are intended to offer improved security of our nation's borders, possible avenues for legalization for foreign nationals currently in the U.S. who do not have legal status to live and work here, new visa categories for temporary workers, increased penalties for criminal aliens and future immigration law violators, the creation of a new system for employers to effectively identify foreign nationals lawfully permitted to work in the U.S. among other changes to the current law. One of the most important proposed changes in the immigration law in the Senate's bill "Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2007" would drastically change employment-based and family-based immigration by eliminating and reconfiguring the preference categories and replace the current employment-based preference green card system with a merits-based points system. Please note that the proposed bills are being debated at this time and we do not yet know what the final immigration bill will look like, so changes to these measures will certainly take place. President Bush has stated he wants to have a final bill on his desk for signing into law sometime in August 2007. If you would like to know more about possible changes in immigration law and how you might be impacted, please contact the attorneys at Slowik & Robinson, LLC. |
