Leaving the United states on an expired Green card

Hi

I really need some advice here, my green card has expired..

A close relative has been diagnosed with terminal cancer in multiple organs and has a very short time to live. I need to get home as soon as possible so i may see him one last time and be there to support my family.

From all of my research i have found that it is a lengthy process to renew your green card. I do not have much time my family member could die any time ....

How can i leave as soon as possible and still be able to get back into the country ?

If i left on the expired green card would i not be able to re enter the untied states?

I am depserate here to get on a plane as soon as i can ...so any help anyone here could give me so i can get to Australia as soon as possible would be very greatly appreciated..

No easy answer on that. You will have to apply to get back in.
