green card , same sex partner Canadian

So what and where do we start to try and get a green card for mt life partner . We are a same sex couple raising two young children together and he is an candian citizen who over stayed his visa . Hes been here over 9 years on a 7 month visa .
We are definitly willing to get a Calif. Civil Union if that has any bearing on all this .
Can anyone give a idea of what we need to start doing in order to "try" and accomplish this

Will not be easy if he overstayed visa. Unless the law changes it may not be possible. Fed law does not recognize same sex marriages currently.
