Confused i want to be a nurse

I want to be a nurse. i have been living in usa since 2000 and my visa was expired since then. my question is - if i study to become a nurse - would i be able to get a greencard, (i know that since there is a shortage, foreign nurses are able to become legal) they dont have a problem because they have a visa that has not expire. would i have a problem when it comes to asking for my citizenship even though my visa was expired?
