How long can you legally stay in the US with a tourist visa?

With a tourist visa you are allowed to stay in the U.S for 90 days. But you are not allowed to do any kind of work or studies.
And I think that you would not be able to change your status to permanet resident ("green card") with that type of visa. But I could be wrong. |

If you entered the U.S. on a Visa Waiver Program (VWP) visa you can only stay for 90 days and you can not extend your stay in any way. You can try to exit and re-enter the U.S. to get a new 90 visa but you are at the whim and will of the customs agent at the boarder and you can not do this at the Mexican or Canadian boarder.
If you entered the U.S. on a B1/B2 visa you can apply for a variety of changes and extensions. Check the U.S. Embassy website in your home country for details on the above. I recommend the Embassy websites because they are easier to navigate than the USCIS website which deals with so many more issues.

You can exit the US to Canada by air and recieve a new I-94 form on re-entry which will be stamped for 90 days. You cannot do this by driving.
