Default Wrongful Termination. Texting Employees Schedules

My boss does not have an official schedule. Only myself, him, and his son ever see the schedule that the two of them create. From that schedule, they text employees their schedules. On many occasions they don't even create a schedule. I have witnessed a few instances where no schedule was created and the employee asks the boss for the schedule and he just says "I will let you know". Well the next day (two different instances) he tries to fire them for not showing up to work even after they specifically asked for the schedule. Is this illegal?

I wish to inform you that your state laws will govern your situation. In this regard generally there is employment at will and thus your employer can terminate an employee at any time. If your employer terminates and makes false allegations then generally the employee may claim damages to his reputation under laws of defamation.

While this practice appears incredibly inefficient and baffling, it does not appear unlawful. If the affected workers are employed at-will, they do not have any basis for legally challenging their employer for threatening to discharge them for failing to adhere to a non-existent work schedule.
