Default Hiring in CA: Is it legal to defame someones character?

California

If I was hired for employment and offered a position and then suddenly the job description changes and I am denied a job because of a poor reference from a previous employer is there any recourse for me. Is this legal to defame someones character? How can I investigate this?

If they said something false (like you stole 300 dollars) you can sue them, but they if they just gave their opinion there is not too much you can do.
