my wife resigned from her job at an insurance agency due to a hostile work environment. since then she has found new employment at a different agency. she found out from clients, that her former employers are telling their customers my wife screwed up their, the customers, policies and left the office in a shambles. in the 2 plus years my wife worked at that agency there weren't any screwed up policies or dissatisfied customers with the work she provided for them. is this defamation of character? slander? is it anything she can put a stop to? any assistance would be greatly appreciated. thank you. |

How was she damaged? No damages equals no suit

The fact that they are tarnishing her reputation in a profession that requires a great element of trust doesn't matter? What about her license? Are there any repercussions towards the license if the ex-employer keeps doing this? There has to be some sort of legal recourse - if for nothing else - to be able to stop them from badmouthing her and attempting to destroy her reputation as a reputable agent. Its amazing how much an employer can get away with leaving the employee no recourse. |

You can certainly talk to an Attorney but without some documentatin showing damages you do not have much chance of success

My mother is having a similar problem. She resigned from her former company to move out of state for better work career opportunities.
Her former manager has been providing false accusations to potential employers, and as a result my mother has been out of a job for the past 7 months. Does she have a case against this manager? Or is there anything she can do to prevent this person from doing further harm to her career and livelihood? |

If someone publicly says or writes anything factually untrue and it damages you, you indeed can sue for slander, libel, defamation, interference with business relations etc. -- or at least threaten to do so and give a warning.

[former manager has been providing false accusations to potential employers]
If truly false and damaging you absolutely can sue for that. |
