I am a union member and I got fired from my work last week. Here's my story:
I worked as building engineer in downtown Chicago for more than 8 years. Last month one of the tenants in our building moved out and left almost all of their stuff eg chairs, computer etc. On the 16th of this month, while I was on my way to my station one of my co-worker told me that according to the management meeting that was held earlier that day we can take anything we want from the empty floors (7th and 8th). The head of security confirmed it that same day since he was in the same meeting. I called one of friend who lives nearby and told him about it. He arrived later that night to pick up some chairs along with his friends; 2 vans and his car). They took more than 40 chairs all in all. But before that I asked the head of security if it is ok for my friend and his friends to come inside the building, he said YES. To make the story short, I was asked not to come to work last Tuesday, October 21st if I don't bring all the chairs. The thing is, I don't have the chairs... On Wednesday I was fired. The reasons are actually not clear whether it's the chairs or allowing the people in the building. According to our chief engineer 'it's not really the chairs that we are bother about but its the people you allowed inside the building they were LIABILITY'. In my defense, I confirmed everything first before I removed the chairs. The 'allowing the people inside the building' is not really my job that's why I asked first the head of security if it is OK. The chairs are definitely not stolen since they said we can take anything we want. I am a union member and I don't know how it works. I already filed for grievance last week and waiting for the result this week. But whatever the outcome will be, do you think I have a case for wrongful termination? Thank you |
