Fired for the wrong reason

I was fired from Kmart in 2002 and I tried to get a job at Sears, However they told me that i was not eligiable for rehire because of theft. However the reason i thought i was terminated was due to the store closing. This worries me because i start law school in the spring and i don't want it on my record what should i do?

Typically a company will open themselves up to a certain amount of liability for telling a prospective employer why you were let go. When you were fired from Kmart, they should have spelled out the exact reason why you were let go.
