Default Can I sue for libel/slander? Can my former employer be held accountable?

I was recently terminated from my job. I found work with another company and restarted my career. I just found out today that an employee from my previous company approached an employee from my new job and made a false statement concerning my dismissal, and then warned the employee to watch me closely. What can I do about this? I have a meeting with my new supervisor tommorrow as a result of this. The employee I work with now gave me a written statement about what happened and will testify on my behalf about this. Can my former employer be held accountable for this?

Yes they can be sued--warn them not to do it again!
