GREETINGS TO ALL ADVISORS
THIS IS IN REGARDS TO MY SIMPLE HONEST AND QUALIFIED FRIEND IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO. HE IS A EX MEDICAL QUALIFIED DOCTOR FROM INDIA BESIDES HAVING AMPLE CANADIAN EDUCATION AND DEGREES IN THE FIELDS OF COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINES AS DOCTOR OF HOMEOPATHY, NATURAL MEDICINES & NATUROPATHY , ACUPUNCTURE AND OSTOPATHY.. BESIDES THIS HE HAS STUDIED AND EARNED FOR HIMSELF A LEGIT PhD in Psychology & Counseling. Recently he has been accused by a very insecure & racist woman who complained to OPP who has found him only accused of using a "Dr" title without being registered with 5 medical college. He has been in practice for last many years as a Doctor of natural medicines and he always used his name as ..Dr.Ramamurthy Ph.D followed by Doctor of Naturopathy & others he has never had a single complained and also this woman has called him a dirty black monkey , the ladys cheque bounced and my poor friend is in frustrations ....the defence crown lawyer and OPP cop who is a bit cranky types have asked him to come to court and resolve... He has all solid documentation and he has never mislead anyone QUESTION IS - CAN A PhD degree holder not use or refer to oneself as a Doctor having clarified his modalities? and not cheating or lying at all.... where can such laws be found in Ontario 2000 such doctors use the same way in Ontario ..they are not accused why is my friend accused??? PLEASE ANY ONE IN LAW OR PRACTICING HEALTH LAW WOULD ADVISE... HE IS POOR BUT EXTREMELY WONDERFUL DOCTOR WARM WISHES LIONKING |

PhD's can refer to themselves as doctors to my knowledge but cannot imply they are medical doctors.
He can confirm with the university he attended and the equivalent in Canada and they can confirm the protocol. |

Hi
yes correct no he has never ever implied himself as a medical doctor but only as a earned PhD and never represents himself wrongly. He is getting his PhD legally sealed by Canadian embassy as a International PhD with all respect in Canada. Is there a law in such earned academics in Canada? Can you guide me to such law or protocol? regards |

A PhD is a real doctor; wheareas an MD is not a real doctor. The MD is, of course, a physician who calls himself 'doctor,' but doctor means 'teacher' or 'scholar,' and not 'physician.' Any decent lawyer can clearly demonstrate that it is the MDs who make false claims about being doctors.

You can use the term Dr to my knowledge but cannot imply or mislead to patients or others that you are a medical doctor, and especially cannot treat or give advice as such.

Ontario Regulated Health Professions Act governs. The person in question should consult a lawyer if they want a detailed explanation to rely on. My recollection, not looking it up, don't rely on this, is that in the context of providing health care, the only people who can use the title "doctor" or "dr." before their name is a medical doctor, chiropractor, dentist, optometrist, and one other, who is a member of the regulated profession in Ontario (just having an academic degree in one of those fields is not enough).
If you're not in one of those fields or not part of the regulated profession, and you are providing health care of any sort, you may (I don't know, don't rely on this) be able to refer to oneself as e.g. "John Smith, doctor of [whatever]" or "John Smith, Ph.D." but NOT "Dr. John Smith". Which seems to be the problem. There are also issues, regardless of academic degrees, if one is not admitted to a recognized profession, it may not be legally permissible to offer health care at all depending on what you do, but that's something to consult an expert about. |

Anyone holding a doctoral degree should be able to call themselves or be referred to as doctor. This should be obvious. If you hold a PhD, JD (law, and indeed the very first doctorates nearly 1000 years ago were for lawyers and no other profession), MD, DDS, etc. you should have the right, title and interest in using the name "doctor" - legally and practically.
