Default Health problems and home damage: Chinese drywall toxic gases

As if homeowners didn’t have enough to worry about, they can now add toxic gases emitted by imported Chinese drywall to the list. Increasing evidence indicates that some of the over 500 million pounds of drywall shipped to the U.S. from China during the housing boom following Hurricane Katrina contained potentially toxic materials that can release gases believed responsible for damaging homes and causing health problems.

A class-action lawsuit was filed late last month in US District court in Fort Meyers.

If you are among the countless residents of newer homes in South Florida who have encountered health problems, or strange odors in your home resulting from the use of Chinese drywall, consult an attorney. You should not be made to put up with toxic drywall, and Chinese drywall problems only serve to heighten serious economic problems already prevalent in South Florida. Property values are dropping as it is. You don’t need to be chased from your home by a bad smell that is not of your doing.

Interested persons can obtain additional information by visiting CPSC’s Drywall Information
Center (U.S. CPSC: Drywall Information Center) or CDC’s Response to Imported Drywall page
(CDC - Drywall - Home Page).

CPSC has received about 1,311 reports from residents in 26 states and the District of Columbia who believe their health symptoms or the corrosion of certain metal components in their homes are related to the presence of drywall produced in China. State and local authorities have also received similar reports.

Homeowners report corrosion or blackening of metal in or on electrical fixtures, appliances, plumbing and air conditioner coils.

Consumers largely report that their homes were built in 2006 to 2007, when an unprecedented increase in new construction occurred in part due to the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005.

Lawyers: Chinese drywall makers may ignore suits

Lawyers representing homeowners and homebuilders who used drywall suspected of causing corrosion and possible health risks say they expect Chinese companies that made the wallboard to ignore hundreds of lawsuits filed against them in U.S. courts.

Among tactics lawyers are considering are suits against U.S. investment bankers who financed the Chinese companies, and seizing ships that brought the drywall to the United States.

Miller said lawyers are considering asking courts to seize vessels that delivered the drywall.
