Can I work in Canada and keep my US Green Card?

Hi,

I got my green card in Sep 08. I got laid off in Nov 08, and I'm looking for a job.
The job market is weak and I may have to expand my search.

Can I work in Canada and keep my US Green card? If so, how do I do this?

If it is a US firm and the transfer is temporary yes...in some cases.

Otherwise it will be difficult and you may abandon the card.

But review your details with legal counsel too.

So, you mean that I can neither apply for a commuter status, nor for a re-entry permit (can't remember if that's the app for travel or the advance perm to rtn) ? i.e. are you saying those docs only apply if you're not working in the foreign country?

Not 100% sure but i am sure that you can apply for re-entry permit as long as it is a temp appointment (2yrs or less) and your intention is to return. You will also need to keep bank accounts, submit tax returns etc. I would consult local USCIS office.
