Default adjustment of status I-485

I applied for adjustment of status for my father and we received a receipt from USCIS on april 29th.He is here on visitor'svisa and his I-94 expires on September 23rd. I would like to know if I have to apply for extension of his visitor's visa or is it legal to stay without applying for extension as his I-485 is being processed. I would appreciate your advise.

Thank You,
Anu. G
