Maine school district reorganization law

Supporters of Maine's school district consolidation mandate have launched their campaign in opposition to a November referendum asking voters if they want to repeal the law.

Question 3 on the ballot asks voters if they want to do away with the school district reorganization law, which was enacted in 2007 with the goal of reorganizing the state's 290 school administrative units into about 80 regional units.

The "Vote No on 3" campaign says the new law saves taxpayers $36 million a year and creates more efficient school systems.

Opponents of the law who forced the issue onto the ballot say the law doesn't result in any net savings.
