Corzine comments on Obama's back-to-school address controversy

By Tom Hester Sr. (NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM)

Quote:
The controversy over President Obama's plan to deliver a televised back-to-school speech to the nation's students on Tuesday could be considered the grand finale to the 2009 "Silly Season.''

"Silly season'' is a journalism term for the slow news period of summer when events that might not even be news at a busier time, make headlines. A silly season a few summers ago featured a small rock found in Antarctica that became worldwide news when it was declared that it came from Mars and was definitive proof of life on the planet.

"I think we've reached a little bit of the silly season when the president of the United States can't tell kids to study hard and stay in school,'' presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters. "I think both political parties agree that the dropout rate is something that threatens our long-term economic success.''

Conservative critics charge Obama is trying to push a political agenda.

Republican Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a potential presidential candidate, described Obama's speech is "uninvited'' and questioned his motives.

Well, another governor New Jersey's Jon Corzine, Friday came to Obama defense.

Obama Violates Federal Law to Indoctrinate Your Children

By J. Matt Barber

Quote:
In what many analysts believe is both an unprecedented and wildly inappropriate partisan move, President Obama has announced that on Tuesday, September 8, he will do an end run around parents and directly target children in what is widely perceived as an effort to implement his extreme leftist political agenda. As millions of parents across the country learn more about his scheme, they have become justifiably outraged. The backlash has been tremendous.

But Obama’s extreme overreach goes well beyond political tastelessness. It’s actually a violation of federal law.

U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan recently sent a letter to school principals encouraging them to cease academic instruction and have classes tune in to a live speech Obama will give to children during school hours on Tuesday at noon. The DOE even provided lesson plans, sample activities and questions that teachers can use to promote the event. The letter encourages teachers to “build background knowledge about the president by reading books about Barack Obama.”

Secretary Duncan is a left-wing Chicagoland politician who chose Kevin Jennings as Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools. Jennings is founder of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network), an extremist group that promotes forced acceptance of homosexuality and transexuality in schools to children as young as five.

Laura Bush backs Obama on school speech

Former first lady Laura Bush on Monday expressed support for President Barack Obama's decision to speak to the nation's school children, saying it is "really important for everyone to respect the president of the United States."

In an interview with CNN, Mrs. Bush, a former school teacher, said, "There's a place for the president of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children" to stay in school. And she said parents and others also need to send that message.

Obama's planned remarks Tuesday to be broadcast by C-SPAN to many schools across the country has drawn protests from conservatives and some parents who said the president is trying to indoctrinate the nation's children. Some parents have said they plan to keep their children home from school because of the Obama speech.

"That's their right," Mrs. Bush said. "That certainly is the right of parents to choose what they want their children to hear in school."

"I also think it's also really important for everyone to respect the president of the United States," she said.
Obama in his speech will urge students to stay in school.

Some of the president's critics have been adamantly opposed to the idea of an address by Obama to children.

"The president's speeches tend to be [about] what's wrong with the country and what can we do to fix it," said Bill Hogsett, a parent from Dallas, Texas.
