Top U.S. political fundraiser was arrested
The brother-in-law of Hassan Nemazee, a top political fundraiser for U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was arrested on charges that he helped defraud Citigroup Inc. and HSBC Holdings Plc of tens of millions of dollars.
“Many of the fraudulent documents submitted by Nemazee to Citibank and HSBC were created by Shahin Kashanchi, in consultation with Nemazee,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. Kashanchi was arrested today on two counts of bank fraud and will appear in federal court in Grand Junction, Colorado. He lives in Telluride, Colorado. |
