Normally his view is a factor but only a factor--he does not get to decide.

Each state has slightly different rules.

Is there a court order for visitation?

If there is that court order MUST be obeyed until:
1. The court modifies the order
or
2. Your son becomes an adult.

Until either of those 2 things happen, you have to make sure that he visits, or you'll risk being held in contempt of court.

On the other hand, if there isn't any court order for visitation, you and your son can choose. Then it will be up to your ex to file in court for a set visitation order.
