I'm in a situation where I have been "disfellowshipped" from the religious sect I was once was a member of which means that my family members and former friends shun me. The reason for this is that I no longer agree with the beliefs of this sect.
In the 4 years since this happened, my middle daughter has had two children with her husband and my oldest daughter will be having her first child in February. Up until I was "shunned" we were a very close knit family and I looked forward to seeing my future grandchildren but now, I am not allowed to see them much less spend time with them. I don't want to interfere with their lives or religious choices but I would like to see my grandchildren, be able to develop a normal grandmother relationship with them, give them gifts, etc. Is there any legal basis for asking for visits with my grandchildren? As far as I'm concerned, supervised visits are fine - I just want to see them. |

Some states allow you to petition the court but normally the parents wishes are going to govern here.
So it may be best to try to work something out with them if at all possible. Or consult local counsel to see if you have any case to force visits. |
