Default Commitment to Mental Institution

My wife suffers from Bi-Polar illness. She controls her illness and sees her doctors on a regular basis. She will occasionally have a breakdown and display distructive behaivor such as breaking dishes and destroying miscellanous objects in our house.
I have been married to her for 10 years and I always stop this behaivor as soon as I find out it is happening.
Her mother is trying to have her commited to a mental institution against my will. Can she do this? I know she would not harm herself or anyone else but she takes her frustration out on inanimate objects on occasion. I do not want her commited! What can I do? Please help. Thanks in advance.

Why is the mother doing that? Has there been a problem as to her?

It's extemely doubtful that your MIL will prevail. Your wife needs to speak to her Dr about what her mother is attempting to do. Your wife's Dr will be able to clear it up real quick.

I fully understand your situation, I am also bi-polar and have been known to destroy objects in the past, but I have never directed my behavior at any person or animal. This type of behavior is typical in a bi-polar sufferer and is usaully documented by a Dr that the person is not a danger to themself or anyone else.
