Default My friend has debts and can't afford to engage for a lawyer

My friend is having a hard time for years and wishes to apply aid from you. But after running through the terms and conditions from your website and found that she might not satisfy the "Means Test" but really hope you can extend the aid to her. Her husband owed a lot of debts under her name either officially (bank credit card, phone bill, car loan, son\'s school fee.etc) or unofficially (She has borrowed a lot of money from her relatives and friends for him whenever he begged her for money by saying those are court order). He always delays the repayment and all the concerned authority always chase my friend to settle coz it is under her name. My friend got to borrow money from others and used up all her saving and bonus from Company to cover the outstanding debts. Now the husband even engaged a lawyer to file a divorce and does not want to pay the debt. He doesn't want to talk to my friend regarding the debt and asked my friend to talk to his lawyer. In this case must my friend engage a lawyer in order to let the husband pay all the debts that he owed actually? But my friend really can't afford to engage for a lawyer that is why I am seeking helps from you for her. How my friend is going to settle all the debts that owed by his husband but under her name if his lawyer said he doesn't have to pay coz everything is under my friend's name? Is there a way to appeal? Can anybody help her as all her pay has dump into the debts caused by his husband? My friend used to have a hdb flat owned by her dad and herself and it was transferred to her after her dad passed away. She sold away the flat and using the money to buy another one (where they currently staying now) when she got married with her husband six years ago. Of course the flat is under both of their names under Singapore Rules and Regulations but all the money was come out from the sold flat and my friend. He didn\'t pay a single cent. His only contribution is the deduction from cpf for the loan after they bought it. Will the husband get half of the money after selling out the flat just because it is under his name also even he didn't' come out any money? If yes this is really unfair and for nothing his husband got the money and do whatever he wants and my friend will be kept suffering? Is there a way to fight against his entitlement of the money? Please help my friend as her parents already passed away long time ago and her sisters are not helping her. I am her friend but things I can help are really very limited as my income even lesser then my friend. So please, really need your help. Awaiting for your soonest reply as the lawyer engaged by his husband is going to look for my friend in two weeks time. Many thanks

Sorry I didn't know that this is not a Singapore website. I thought it is when I posted the message.
It is a test from Singapore Legal Aid Bureau in order to get free legal advise.
Anyone here can help my friend based on the problems she is facing?

Are they going to stay married?

If not a court will help ensure that he takes responsibility for his share of the debt.

She should stop funding him now no matter what--it does not seem to be helping.
