Not married and pregnant

I am currently pregnant. The biological father and I have discussed
marriage but don't think that we will be married before the baby is born.
Are there are legal disadvantages to not getting married before the birth of
the baby? I was told that in the State of UT, unmarried parents are not
recognized as the legal guardian of the child and that you must be awarded
custody of your own child to protect yourself from any unfortunate
incidents. Is this correct? Would it be in the best interest of everyone
to be married before the birth?
