My spouse has been diagnosed with Manic Depression and has gone off his meds several times as well as continued drinking. He is applying for credit cards as well as asking for line of credits to make large purchases and take trips. Is there any way that I can safeguard myself, so we don't loose everything? I don't know my legal rights in Canada (Ontario) but I need to do something quickly. We are retired so don't have extra money for lawyers fees, but I am considering filing for divorce if that is the only way to keep myself from assuming his ongoing expenses. Help PLEASE!!!

That will be the safest action given what you say here; there is no other 100% method. You can also call all the card companies or ask to have your credit record noted but there are many downsides to doing that.

Hi, you mentioned that divorce is the safest route but are there not any other steps that could be taken without going that route?
You mentioned advising the credit card companies -- can I advise them not to issue a card in his name or I would not be resonsible for any costs charged if he doesn't pay? Or, in order to do this would they require a note from his doctor stating that he is not of sound mind? |

You could try speaking with the companies. Your call alone may have the desired effect.
