Default Chicago Mayor Daley to Sign Bubble Zone Law Limiting Pro-Life Abortion Actions

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is signing the bubble zone ordinance today that will effectively limit the free speech rights of pro-life advocates. The city council approved the new law this week that pro-life groups say targets those who provide women alternatives outside abortion centers.

Daley said the ordinance will “try to make sure nobody is harassed," according to the Chciago Tribune.

The mayor said pro-life advocates can express their opinions but “should not harass and scream and yell” at people going into abortion centers, even though that doesn't appear to be happening.

“There has to be some civility left in our society," he said.

Default Daley backs 'bubble zone' law for abortion clinic patients

Rejecting appeals from abortion foes, Mayor Richard Daley said Friday he will sign a measure intended to make sure protesters give some space to patients entering clinics.

The City Council voted 28-13 on Wednesday to approve the ordinance, which creates 8-foot "bubble zones" around people who are within 50 feet of a medical facility. Venturing into that space without consent could result in a $500 fine.

Critics said the ordinance violates free speech rights of protesters who want to counsel women out of having abortions. They called on Daley to use his veto power to block the measure from taking effect Nov. 17.

But the mayor sided with supporters who said the new measure will promote patient safety.
