can he just leave at 17?
Hi, we are in Florida. My boyfriend is 17 and I'm 19. His mom is a drunk and his dad is abusive. His home environment is detrimental to his academics and they use cruel punishment. In Michigan DCF was at their door many a time.
Recently the neighbors called the police because a fight between him and his dad got so bad, my boyfriend told them what was going on and the cop said if you leave when I find you I will put you in JDC for 90 days. And he wouldn't do anything to try and help him. What would happen if my boyfriend just left home and went to another state, and I joined him later? He wants out of his home so badly. Is there any solution?? |

Social Services is answer not leaving. If he leaves he can be reported as runaway and if your with him you could be charged as accessory. The national Hotline for abuse ia 1-800-4-A-CHILD

If the parents don't care, he can move out. If they will not allow it, he needs to inform somebody, child protective services, of his home living situation and the violence he's being subjected to. It doesn't sound like they'll really care or notice he's even gone.

What if he were to leave home and move in with his grandparents across town. Would the police make him go home then too?

The police cannot do anything. This is a civil matter regarding custody. You can allow the kid to go live with gram and gramp. He can live anywhere he wants as long as he has custodial permission. If he does not have that, he's considered a runaway. Keep the police out of it and everyone will be fine.
