Confused power of attorney

Our son is in a coma and we have recently came in from Mexico to handle his medical care only to find out that the hosp will not give us this right when that is why they told us to come instead they are giving all legal rights to an EX girlfriend and we have no rights he has never been married and has only one son of 14 years old so we were told we are next of kin. So how can the hospital do this?
