Default marriage ?

We (my "husband" and I) have been together for 30 years. We need to get married legally. The problem is I have been using his last name the entire time. How do we start the process? We already share the same last name. We live in New Jersey. Please advise!!

You may simply file the documents as you would if it were all occurring 30 years ago. No difference...

Please respond ___ Are you sure this will take care of my situation? I need to straighten this out. I live in NJ --- not a common law state.

you should just file the papers with your LEGAL name. THE NAME ON YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD & BIRTH CERTIFICATE. you said you need to get maried? it would be different if you were moving out. just go to court & file. simple as that.

My social security card has my "married" name on it. Back then they didn't require proof of marriage --- you just changed the name. Will the birth certificate be O.K.? Every ID that I have has my "husband's" last name on it!!

You should first call the social security office and ask them that. then call and ask the court's clerk (tell her everything) & tell her that you need to apply for your marriage. ask her what you need to do. there shouldn't be too many things to do. if you have already aquired his name, all you should need is the marriage certificate. there shouldn't be too many problems. if you have your social security card you could just go apply for the marriage papers and see what happens. i'd call 1st though.
