Those are among the companies and individuals currently being investigated or prosecuted by the Justice Department’s fraud section, which handles complex financial cases and often swoops in to assist U.S. attorneys across the country. It also helps run a medicare fraud “strike force.”

On Thursday, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, who had said he was looking for a “rock star” from the defense bar to lead the section, announced he was bringing in Denis McInerney of Davis Polk (pictured).

Among other things, McInerney defended Arthur Andersen on obstruction-of-justice charges related to the Enron scandal and in 1994 he also served as an associate independent counsel in the Whitewater investigation. He was a prosecutor in the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office from 1989 to 1994. Here’s the Dow Jones Newswires story.

McInerney will replace Steve Tyrell, who is looking for work in private practice. A deputy chief in the fraud section, Mark Mendelsohn, who supervises Foreign Corrupt Practices Act prosecutions, has also begun to look for work in the private sector. [End of post.]
